Local area

Located at Vernoil le Fourrier in the Anjou region, close to the Touraine border, Domaine des Vignes provides a peaceful, secluded base from which to explore the beautiful and diverse Loire Valley.

In the village of Vernoil you will find a boulangerie, boucherie, pharmacie, post office, ironmongers, and several small, typically French, bars. There is also a small supermarket on the edge of the village, with fresh bread, meat and fish counters.

Nearby towns include Bourgueil and Chinon.

The ancient town of Saumur, 10 miles away, has many shops and restaurants, as well as the imposing château perched above the River Loire. With an eclectic mixture of wine production, underground caves and equestrianism, Saumur is full of surprises.

Angers and Tours are about 45 minutes away and both are large cities with all expected facilities. Both have beautiful historical buildings and Châteaux.

Cholet has impressive parks and gardens, including the largest Japanese garden in Europe.

The Musee des Blindes is a tank museum which is well worth a visit.

Other places to visit include the zoo at Doue la Fontaine, a miniature village and the mushroom museum.

Disneyland Paris is only 45 minutes away on the TGV.

Nicknamed the “River of Kings” the Loire is the longest and grandest river in France. Along its banks are historic towns and cities and some of the most famous vineyards in the world.

Traditional French cuisine is on the menu in most of the region’s restaurants. Dishes are largely created from the fresh local produce widely available at weekly markets held even in the smallest towns.

You can fish just about anywhere in the Western Loire, on slow rivers and sparkling streams, in quiet ponds and deep lakes. From fly fishing for the wily trout to pike, and zander fishing in the rivers and canals deep in the unspoiled countryside.

Golf - the area has 26 fine courses. There is an excellent 18 hole course at Bauge, just 20 minutes drives from the gites.

Anjou Golf and Country Club is another superb 18 hole golf course spread over almost 100 hectares and has a bar and restaurant where you can relax after a hard day on the course.

All guests receive a welcome pack on arrival to tantalise the taste buds, including fresh free range eggs (from our own hens - all of whom have names), fresh baked bread, milk, tea and coffee.

We ensure that your every need will be provided for - bed linen, towels (except pool towels) and hair dryer are all included at no extra cost.
Additional facilities for infants and children, e.g. cots and highchairs, can all be provided on request.

We offer bike hire for all the family — simply advise us at the time of booking and your bikes will be ready and waiting.

Guests are expected to leave the cottage in the state of cleanliness in which they found it on arrival. We would be happy to restore the cottage on your behalf to the standard of cleanliness required by us at a cost of 40 Euros.
