The Midi Pyrénées area of the south of France is made up of the depatments of Ariege (09), Aveyron (12), Haute-Garonne (31), Gers (32), Lot (46), Hautes-Pyrénées (65), Tarn (81)
& Tarn-et-Garonne (82).
The Midi Pyrérées extends from the Massif Central in the north all the way to the Pyrénées and the Spanish border in the south and is as large as Denmark and larger than Belgium or
Switzerland.
The Midi Pyrénées offers visitors a varied scenery and an equally varied range of activities from skiing to golf.
The major attractions and towns are:
The Canal du Midi - linking the Atlantic to the Mediterranean is the oldest European canal still in use.
Cordes
- in the Tarn was founded in 1222 and it was a new town of its time! Between 1280 and 1350, merchants and noble families built some magnificent residences with Gothic facades, for which Cordes is famous.
Lourdes - in the heart of the Pyrenees, receives more than 5 million visitors from all over the world every year.
Montségur
- in the Ariège is famous worldwide for its château which dominates both the village and the valley.
Toulouse - France’s fourth largest city and the capital of the Midi Pyrénées.
Cahors
- a thriving trading and university centre during the Middle Ages.
Montauban - the largest town in the Tarn-et-Garonne, know as the ‘pinkest of pink cities’.
Marciac
- a 13th century Gascon bastide town is famous for its International Jazz festival held here every August. Castera Verduzan
- an interesting village with thermal baths, a casino, horse racing and an inland lake with beach.
Pau
- has plenty of history, an air of tranquil charm and a climate that has attracted visitors since the 1840's.
