A long-time a favourite destination of European travellers, Burgundy is quickly becoming "discovered" by tourists who are eager to leave the hustle-bustle of Paris behind
them and experience the pleasures of Eastern France: storybook villages, winding wine roads, fascinating museums, splendid cathedrals and a wealth of outdoor activities. With such an exceptional geographic location,
Burgundy has been called the meeting place of civilizations. Right in the heart of Europe, this area still bears the marks of a glorious and turbulent past that has great appeal for tourists. Chalon sur Saône
is a major town. It has theatres, cinemas, restaurants and cafés, museums, parks, swimming pool, sports and other recreational facilities, together with an excellent shopping area. Parking is always readily available.
Chagny is on the Route des Grande Vins. It is a centre for boating on the canal that links the Rivers Saône and Loire. There is a swimming pool, many restaurants and a Sunday morning market. La Ferté
has a man-made lake with a sandy beach, pedalos, shady wood, picnic tables, and café. Close by is the site of the first monastery founded by St. Etienne, with guided tours in English. Beaune
with its Hotel-Dieu, a Flemish-Burgundian-Gothic building, is worth a visit. Dijon
is described in the Lonely Planet guide as one of France’s most appealing provincial cities, with medieval and Renaissance buildings. Here you can visit the Duke's palace, stroll in the spacious streets and buy what was first grown in the vineyards, mustard.
The Morvan is a region of outstanding natural beauty. Sitting in the centre of Bourgogne is the Morvan Forest, a national park covering nearly a quarter of a million hectares. Vezelay
village lies on a hill on the left bank of the Cure River. Its great Benedictine abbey and the hill is UNESCO heritage listed.
